A respiratory illness, yet to be formally named, was spreading across the U.S. during late 2023. Local veterinarians, including Dr. Cameron Jones, began reporting cases in North Florida and Georgia.

Dr. Jones spoke with First Coast News about what local pet owners were seeing, what symptoms to watch for, and what precautions made sense at the time.

What this meant for pet owners

The practical advice at the time was straightforward: watch for coughing, lethargy, nasal discharge and appetite loss; keep a coughing dog away from other dogs; and make sure respiratory vaccinations were current before boarding or grooming.
